Ullapool and District pipers secure sponsorship from Scottish Sea Farms

Ullapool and District Junior Pipe Band has secured a sponsorship deal worth £2,500 from the Scottish Sea Farms Heart of the Community Trust. This cash boost helped with the band’s travel costs to allow them to travel to Belfast to compete in the UK Pipe Band Championships.

Graham Ross, Chairman of the pipe band, said: “This cash support from Scottish Sea Farms is really appreciated as without it the band would have been unable to take part in this competition. The travel costs alone are over £4,000 and the band consist of school children who don’t have an income. This funding helped to make this trip possible and, in turn, allowed us to bring home 2nd place. We are now working hard to get ready for the European Championships in Forres on 28 June.”

Jim Gallagher, Managing Director, Scottish Sea Farms, said: “This is what the Heart of the Community Trust is all about. The Ullapool and District Junior Pipe Band give the whole area something to be proud of and we are delighted to be able to help them go on to achieve further success.”

UK Championships

Ullapool & District Pipe Band... 2nd at the UK championships today at Belfast!!

The UK Pipe Band Championships is one of only five major events in the pipe band competition calendar and took place at the weekend (Saturday 14 June) at Stormont Castle in Belfast.

The 40-strong band was aiming to compete in the final of the championships which they not only achieved but also finished 2nd in their grade, which is a fantastic result for the band.

Travelling from Ullapool, it took over 12 hours to reach Belfast but the band knew it would be worthwhile. They came 4th in their grade at the British Championships last month and were also awarded Pipe Band of the Year at the Traditional Music Awards. Recent success has led to the band doubling in size in the last year and, as there are very few activities for youngsters in the area, it provides a much needed outlet for energy and musical talent.

The band on route to France

The pipe band attended an international competition in Lorient, France in August 2013.

The band performed extremely well, taking second in both the medley and MSR competitions narrowly missing out to the higher graded Prince Charles Pipe Band of the USA.

Well done to all the band members and thanks for all the support from the community and elsewhere.
